Day 17 - The Northwest Passage

When I left Montana this morning I thought today would be a transition day,  kind of a slow day transitioning between the fond memories of the mountains and the excitement about the upcoming Pacific Coast ride.  I remembered that today's road was one of only 26 "America's Byways" (roads designated as one of the most scenic roads in the country),  but I still wasn't expecting much.  Then BooM!! Amazing!!  This road went right through the famous  Northwest Passage of the PA of icebergs northwest and was spectacular by every metric I could imagine! Huge dark tall trees,  winding roaring rivers, boulders,  grasses and shrubs,  all covered in a quiet thick cool pure air.  I saw dozens of birds of prey everywhere and heard even more.  When we pulled over we would close our eyes and just listen to the sounds of this woods.  And the river was truly roaring -  wide,  crystal clear and running fast.  It was gorgeous.  And there we were just riding motorcycles right through all of it,  admiring everything as we passed.  After about 5 hours crossing western Montana and Idaho,  we reached the end of the Passage and entered the parched dry wheat fields that are the eastern Plains of the State of Washington.  On we pressed until 5:30 pm when we reached Walla Walla Washington where we are staying tonight.  Awesome unexpected day!  And yes, in case you are wondering,  I picked Walla Walla Washington because I wanted to say we stayed in Walla Walla Washington. It's fun to say Walla Walla Washington.
